About Freedom Fortnight (F14) - 14 Days of Action & Focus on Freedom from Modern Slavery / Human Trafficking
What is Freedom Fortnight?
Freedom Fortnight is 14 days of focus on different topics/aspects of HTMS, a sort Human Trafficking 102, each day featuring a practical, achievable daily action step (“assignment”) to complete, helping people take next steps on their abolitionist journey.
F14 is designed to help people who are aware of HTMS begin taking simple, informed next steps and practical actions and to put them in position to pursue further actions or to focus on aspects they care about most.
Why 14 Days?
For the “beginner” abolitionist, committing to 14 days of focus, learning and taking action is achievable. It’s a bigger commitment than a single day, allowing more significant time to engage with HTMS overall and more specific topics/aspects, but more “doable” than a whole month or an indefinite commitment to an “abolitionist lifestyle.”
Freedom Fortnight For “Beginner” Abolitionists
F14's goal is to educate, inspire and empower people to take next steps beyond awareness of HTMS.
Many people who have become aware of HTMS, whether working full-time, students or taking care of children, have demonstrated “I can commit to 14 days.”
During the 14 days, we will celebrate progress, highlight innovation and help people to grow in their understanding, engage in conversations and begin to taking simple specific actions to do what they can to help stop modern slavery/human trafficking.
At the end of the 14 days they should feel more informed, more confident, more connected, empowered and in position to continue taking meaningful, impactful actions.
In addition to actions which they are able to do on the day, F14 will often point them to and encourage/invite them to get connected and involved with initiatives/non-profits they want to help.
Freedom Fortnight For “Intermediate” to “Advanced” Abolitionists
& Anti-Slavery/Anti-Trafficking Groups/Non-profits/NGOs
For anti-HTMS organizations and abolitionists further along in their journey, F14 is an opportunity to connect with, encourage, support and empower their supporters, friends and communities.
Over the 14 days, different topics and initiatives / organizations will be featured. Content is designed for the beginner, but will often encourage and inform experienced abolitionists by highlighting progress and innovation by the worldwide community of anti-HTMS practitioners, as they continue to develop new and more sophisticated initiatives or grow and strengthen tried and true models, both of which F14 will help people celebrate and invite people to participate in.
One aim of F14 is to provide a platform/experience which committed abolitionists and anti-HTMS groups/non-profits can utilize to invite members of their communities/networks into meaningful dialogue and practical action, increasing understanding and engagement and creating the potential for further involvement with them in specific aspects or initiatives in the future.
The History of F14, So Far…
2017 – Beta Test
Freedom Fortnight was beta tested with a small group of people in 2017 to a good response. It was primarily text based, featuring online articles and daily emails. You can see the online articles at freedomfortnight.org/beyond-awareness
2018 – Pilot hosted by Freedom United
In 2018 Freedom United is joining in:
to engage their own community with the opportunity to take concrete actions
to demonstrate collaboration in the space
to provide technical infrastructure and expertise to enable a more engaging participant experience (UX), increased quality in curation of the content, as well as the ability to measure impact, quantitatively and qualitatively, providing functionality that can track how many people who join in F14 take the daily action or report back on offline actions taken
Will F14 Ask for Funds from Your Supporters?
No, F14 will not ask your supporters for money during the Fortnight. The focus of the 14 days is not fundraising. Peer-to-peer fundraising is one topic on one day, and F14 participants will be given the action to fundraise a small amount for the anti-HTMS non-profit/charity of their choice. The emphasis on all other days will be non-fundraising ways to take action and, therefore, will not be about or include asking participants to give money.
If your organization joins in, we request that you do not ask your supporters for money during the Fortnight, except for on the day specifically about fundraising. There are many other opportunities during the year for you to ask for funds and for people to give financially. This is not the focus of F14. If sourcing peer-to-peer fundraising is of interest to your non-profit/charity, you may be interested in Freecember (freecember.org).
